CHAPTER XXXII 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, Youíre a beautiful dancer Richard.

[[[Night-time. Sylvia looks in the mirror, smiling to herself, then turns to Richard, who stands behind her.]]]

SYLVIA: Do you think Iíve applied to much rouge, Richard?

RICHARD: No. I think itís beautiful.

    SYLVIA: Well, thank-you kind sir.

[[[She saunters toward him, smiling, but stops in her tracks and turns a bit when Lilli walks in with a basket of flowers and sets it down.]]]

SYLVIA: Well. Now IĎm all powder and paint with nothing to do, as usual.

LILLI: Oh, well we could go outside and count stars.

SYLVIA: Is that what you do here at night? Count stars?

RICHARD: Sometimes we count stars. Sometimes I play my whistle and we sing. Sometimes we mate, sometimes we sleep.

    SYLVIA: Mate?

    RICHARD: Yes.

SYLVIA: (curious) Do you, MATE, often?

    RICHARD: Whenever we want to.

    SYLVIA: Just like that?

    RICHARD: Yes.

LILLI: Well sometimes we dance. I love to dance! Címon Richard, letís show Sylvia how we dance!

[[[She takes his hands and skips around in a circle with him. Sylvia approaches, arms folded contemptuously.]]]

BOTH: Ring around the rosey, a pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall down!

[[[They fall down, laughing, then stand up.]]]

LILLI: Címon Sylvia, you try it!

SYLVIA: I donít call that a dance! Itís childish, and simple-minded.

    RICHARD: What do you mean?

SYLVIA: GROWN people donít dance like that!

LILLI: Oh, maybe we should learn a grown-up dance for San Francisco.

    SYLVIA: I shall teach you!

    LILLI: Oh, will you?!

[[[Lilli reaches out for Sylviaís hands, but Sylvia takes the opportunity to get close to Richard and moves his hands in the proper position, then dances him around the room, showing him how to move his feet.]]]

SYLVIA: Itís like this. Itís a bit naughty, itís called the Spanish Polka. Duh-duh-dum! Duh-duh-dum! Duh-duh-dum! Duh-duh-dum! Spiritís willing, flesh is weak, kiss me darling, on the cheek!

[[[He does. They both laugh. Lilli looks hurt and confused.]]]

    SYLVIA: Now, do it slow. 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, Youíre a beautiful dancer Richard. 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3. . .

[[[She dances him slowly around the room. Lilliís had enough. She runs out of the hut, brushing them out of positing as she does.]]]

SYLVIA: Lillianís gonna have to brush up on her manners! Itís not polite to leave your guests in the middle of a lesson! Well weíre sorry, but sheíll just have to wait her turn.

[[[She takes his arms and continues ď1-2-3Ē-ing him around the room.]]]
