CHAPTER XXII I let him go, in peace.

As he runs out of the forest, Lilli approaches. She stops short and gasps, seeing the bloody spear and Richard covered in dried mud.]]]

LILLI: Richard! Richard! What happened? What have you done?

    RICHARD: Had to hide.

    LILLI: Oh!

RICHARD: There were all these heathens. They danced all around me but they didn’t see me. If they had I’d have been dead.

[[[They go into the ocean to wash him off.]]]

RICHARD: There was this one heathen. And at first I wanted to kill him, but then I didn’t want to kill him, and then. . . I couldn’t kill him.

LILLI: Well then he saw you! He’ll tell the others!

RICHARD: No. I let him go, in peace.

LILLI: I hope you’re right. Oh Richard, I’m so glad you‘re not hurt! I thought I‘d never see you again! I never want us to fight again! Ever!

    RICHARD: Me neither.

[[[They clasp hands and hug, cheek-to-cheek.]]]

    RICHARD: Lilli?

    LILLI: Yes?

    RICHARD: Friends?

    LILLI: Oh, yes. Always.

[[[They kiss each others cheeks, and their lips brush against each others, gently. They kiss again, on the lips. Tenderly, then with more passion, pent up for years. They sink down to their necks in water and embrace.]]]

RICHARD: (whispering) I feel like crying.

    LILLI: (whispering) So do I.

RICHARD: I want us to be husband and wife.

    LILLI: Yes.

    [[[They kiss again.]]]
