CHAPTER XXI Cannibals

[[[Lilli sits in the hut, slicing a banana. She hears the cannibal’s drums and looks around.]]]

[[[The mud has dried on Richard, and he watches the cannibals. Just as he is covered in brown paint, they are covered in white paint. One chants and holds up a human heart as an offering to their gods.]]]

[[[Lilli has had enough. She gets up and leaves the hut.]]]

[[[The ceremony is over and all but one cannibal have gone. The last uses a brush to clean up the site, then leaves. Richard approaches a statue. He picks up a spear just as a lone cannibal approaches the grove.

Both stop, unsure. Richard puts the spear down and spreads his arms as a friendly gesture, smiling. The cannibal, very nervous, smiles also, a toothless smile, and laughs a frightened, noiseless laugh. Richard moves aside and lets the cannibal pass. He uses the spear to pick up the offering, which falls. He touches the tip of the spear, then runs off, sickened.
